Main Idea
The Middle Ages (roughly 500-1500 CE) in Europe featured feudal social structures, a dominant Church, and gradual change following the fall of Rome.
Causes / Foundations
- The fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 CE) left a power vacuum filled by local lords.
- Feudalism organised society around land-for-loyalty relationships between lords and vassals.
- The Catholic Church provided unity, education, and authority across fragmented kingdoms.
Key Events & Dates
- 800 CE: Charlemagne crowned Holy Roman Emperor.
- 1095-1291: The Crusades, military campaigns to reclaim the Holy Land.
- 1215: Magna Carta signed in England, limiting royal power.
- 1347-1351: The Black Death kills roughly a third of Europe's population.
- Late 15th century: Transition toward the Renaissance begins.
Key Figures
- Charlemagne: united much of Western Europe under his rule.
- Pope Urban II: called for the First Crusade in 1095.
- Joan of Arc: led French forces during the Hundred Years' War.
Consequences
- Feudalism shaped social class structures for centuries.
- The Black Death caused labour shortages, weakening feudalism.
- The Crusades increased trade and cultural exchange between Europe and the Middle East.
Common Mistakes
- Calling the whole era the "Dark Ages"—there was significant learning, art, and trade.
- Assuming feudalism was identical across all of Europe; practices varied by region.
