Every English word plays a job in a sentence. These jobs are called parts of speech, and knowing them helps you build clear, correct sentences.
Key Concepts
- Words are classified by function, not spelling
- The same word can be different parts of speech depending on use (e.g., 'run' as noun or verb)
- Sentences need at least a subject (noun/pronoun) and a verb
Definitions
- Noun: person, place, thing, or idea
- Pronoun: replaces a noun (he, they, it)
- Verb: action or state of being
- Adjective: describes a noun
- Adverb: describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb
- Preposition: shows relationship (in, on, under)
- Conjunction: joins words/clauses (and, but, because)
- Interjection: expresses emotion (Wow!)
Structures / Templates
- Simple sentence: Subject (noun) + Verb + Object (noun)
- Descriptive sentence: Adjective + Noun + Verb + Adverb
Examples
